These tools operate at different layers

A manuscript can be beautifully phrased and structurally weak. It can also have excellent structure while suffering from repetition, poor dialogue balance, overused words, or uneven sentence construction. Those are different editorial layers and they deserve different tools.

Choose AutoCrit when…

You have written substantial prose and want systematic evidence about the writing itself. Reports can reveal patterns that are difficult to notice after reading the same draft repeatedly: excessive adverbs, repeated phrases, dialogue balance, sentence variation, readability, or sections whose momentum changes.

It is the more relevant tool when your question is “How is this manuscript written?” It can support a self-editing pass before a human editor, beta reader, or submission.

Choose Outline Analyzer when…

You want to know whether the story is ready to become a manuscript. It helps locate chapters that repeat the same dramatic value, turns that arrive without enough setup, characters who react without meaningful change, and endings whose payoff is not fully earned.

Because it works from summaries, large structural moves remain relatively inexpensive. Combining two chapters or replacing a midpoint in an outline is far easier than discarding tens of thousands of polished words.

The practical order: macro before micro

Start with the outline and use Outline Analyzer to test the causal and emotional spine. Revise the plan, draft the manuscript, then use AutoCrit to identify prose-level patterns. If drafting changes the story substantially, create a fresh reverse outline and run another structural pass before the final polish.

This order avoids spending hours refining sentences inside a scene that the story no longer needs. It also keeps expectations clear: story analysis cannot tell you whether every paragraph sings, and prose analysis cannot automatically repair the dramatic premise beneath those paragraphs.

Limitations worth knowing

Outline Analyzer is not a grammar checker or line editor. It does not inspect every sentence, rewrite prose, or replace copyediting. AutoCrit requires enough manuscript text for its prose-oriented reports to become useful, so it is not a direct substitute for a dedicated outline assessment at the earliest planning stage.
